This telegram from the US Ambassador of Buenos Aires to the Department of State in Washington, which is heavily redacted, discusses UNHCR information regarding disappeared Uruguayan refugees. Of some 80 Uruguayans who had disappeared in Argentina in 1976, about 36 later turned up in Uruguayan jails. Of these 11 were given conditional liberty. The UNHCR has also records of 50 Uruguayans disappeared in Argentina in 1977-1978. Of these 50 Uruguayans, only five reappeared in Argentine jails whilst the whereabouts of the rest remain unknown.
