Coup d’état in Bolivia

Date
21/8/1971

Through a military coup, General Hugo Banzer overthrew the government of General Juan José Torres. Banzer’s dictatorial government distanced itself from the nationalist and popular politics adopted by Torres, in order to establish an authoritarian government which suspended civil rights by prohibiting trade unions and repressing student and mineworkers’ unions.
