          In the context of the early repressive coordination between Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, Jefferson Cardim was captured in Buenos Aires on 11th December 1970, alongside his son, Jefferson Lopetegui and his nephew, Eduardo Lopetegui.
Colonel Jefferson Cardim had risen against the dictatorship in 1965 by leading an armed group known as the “Guerrilha de Três Passos” in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where the action took place. Cardim belonged to the Movimento Nacionalista Revolucionário (National Revolutionary Movement, MNR): a group which was connected to Leonel Brizola, the former governor of Rio Grande do Sul state.
